Natch!4Two interns were starting on that kickoff Monday. Gene andJean met by Happenstance, the coffee cart outside the massiveDeenah headquarters. On that blustery day, Happenstance wason the east side of the building. On some days, the coffee cartwas on the west side. No one ever seemed to know when or why.Somehow Lucky always seemed to know, so he was usually theone assigned to pick up the morning muffins. Happenstance hadgood muffins.Standing in line, Gene buttoned his new blazer to shieldhimself from the wind. A bit too snug, he kept tugging on thesleeves, already regretting the purchase. Next to him, Jeanhunched in the lee of the coffee cart, rechecking the time andinstructions on her yellow Deenah appointment card. As theywaited, Lucky ran by, chasing his hat down the sidewalk. Thewind blew it across Deenah%u2019s white marble steps. The hatbounced into a planter where it ruffled the heads of somefrazzled tulips before it snagged on one of Q%u2019s splayed fingers.Poor Lucky had to kick off his shoes, roll up his pant legs and tiptoe through the cold water. It was, after all, his lucky hat, wornon auspicious occasions. %u201cShiiittt,%u201d he muttered to himself,increasingly anxious to get his hat, get the muffins, and getupstairs for the big announcement.Distracted by Lucky%u2019s antics, Cali the coffee barista mixed-uptwo coffee orders. Gene and Jean simultaneously called out theskim/soy switcharoo. The mix-up prompted awkward glancesand a nervous laugh. They exchanged coffees, struck up aconversation, and quickly discovered that they were both headedfor the Deenah front doors.%u201cDo you work here?%u201d asked Gene.%u201cIt%u2019s my first day,%u201d Jean replied.%u201cMe too!%u201dDeenah is located at the very center of things.
