Natch!23during one epic, drunken rant. Carbon%u2014it was at once the stuffof life and its unwanted by-product. For millions and millions ofyears, Deenah staff had been carefully, painstakingly working outways to store and sequester it. How could they bury it? Whatcould absorb it? Who could reuse it? Then the Homps just set itall loose, all that carbon back into the atmosphere in just a fewhundred years. Millions and millions of design concepts weresquandered, entire careers tossed into the dumper. Why theFolks Upstairs would insist that the Homps be included wasbeyond reason. The planet had gotten along just fine withoutthem for most of its tenure. It could surely do so moving forward.%u201cPerhaps, it won%u2019t work out,%u201d was the unspoken sentiment aroundthe stump. Each design project was a complex organism with alife of its own. What was stipulated at the onset was not alwayswhat was delivered in the end. Priorities changed. Personnelcame and went. New ideas upset the apple cart. Componentswere sometimes accidentally discarded or mistakenly forgotten. No one around the stump would shed tears if the Homps endedup on the cut list.
